Name: Karina Lyle
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Canon: Tiger & Bunny
Timeline: From the epilogue of the series (when Kotetsu becomes part of the second league heroes)

Background:
http://tigerbunny.wikia.com/wiki/Blue_Rose <- this pretty much covers Karina’s background in a nutshell. But what it doesn’t capture is that over the course of the series, she’s probably one of the heroes that develops the most as a character aside from Barnaby and Ivan (Origami Cyclone). While her blossoming feelings for Kotetsu is one story, what’s often overlooked is her own growth as a competent hero and trustworthy teammate.

At the beginning of the series, Karina is very well-known for her “Cutie Escape”, which is basically just her using her ice powers to get away from danger. It’s understandable, of course, given how the series really plays up the fact that Karina’s outfit has an extremely impractical design. But as the series progresses, she becomes less prone to doing this and is shown to be much braver than she once was. Towards the end of the series, when faced with the dilemma of blowing up all the other heroes to survive or allowing herself to die for the sake of them, she speaks up first: not to make the decision to make anyone die, but to give everyone faith that Kotetsu and Barnaby will make it through.

Personality:
Karina is pretty much a stereotypical schoolgirl with a twist. She’s stubborn, strong-willed, and seemingly self-centered. But this headstrong nature of hers also shows in the way she perseveres with her career both as a singer and a hero. Although she has good parents who can be a little hard on her sometimes and a pleasant school life, she still goes out of her way to be a part-time singer at a restaurant and tries to push her company into allowing her to do what she wants: to be more focused on her career as an idol. At the same time, ever since her talk with Kotetsu about being a hero, she has been putting more and more work into being a worthy crime-fighter in the public eye.

As Blue Rose, Karina is pressured to take on this persona of a sex symbol with a sadistic streak. While she can act the part, she totally dislikes this. In one of the Audio Dramas, she complains to her boss about the things she’s asked to read out and tells him that he can’t answer requests sent in by listeners to verbally abuse them. Ironically, though, she actually is bossy when she sees someone incompetent (see: Kotetsu). She also recognizes how pandering to her fans desires to see her as some sex symbol makes her look like an idiot and not a hero. In a way, this need to serve as a marketing tool keeps her from being the kind of person she wants to be, and she’s well-aware of that. She knows she can’t fight this.

In her private life, Karina seems to put on different faces: to the people she’s closest to, she’s a sweet girl but very diligent with her priorities. She’s more likely to forgo things she enjoys for important work. To those she considers just workmates, she can be icy and bossy, distancing them from her. Unfortunately, her iciness gets a little worse around the people she actually feels attracted to as like a kind of defense mechanism. As one of her friends in the series said, Karina isn’t very honest with herself. So she needs some kind of push to get her to realize her true feelings. When she finally realizes she likes Kotetsu, she still puts on an icy/bossy face around him, but she becomes a little more serious about pursuing him.

Speaking of how honest Karina is with herself, in the same Audio Drama where she becomes angry at her boss for making her sound like an idiot, she also turns nervous when Barnaby turns the tables on her during their radio interview and asks her the questions she really wants to hear. In a way, she doesn’t seem used to being given the things she wants. She gets uncomfortable when people treat her well, most likely because she’s so used to taking care of herself.

But when push comes to shove, Karina can be an incredibly brave, strong-willed, and honest girl. Above everything else, she values the people closest to her: she gives her friends the courage to not give in to the villain’s wishes, and even rushes to the hospital in a very uncomfortable swimsuit when Pao-Lin (Dragon Kid) catches a fever in an Audio Drama.

In a nutshell, Karina is a strong-willed, ambitious, focused young woman who pulls through in a pinch and can be a bit bossy. But behind this strong facade, she’s not very honest with herself and feels uncomfortable when other people care for her. Sometimes, it takes a little extra push to make her come to a decision, whether it’s standing up for her friends, coming to terms that she likes someone, or deciding between two things that matter a lot to her. When she is able to come to that decision, she stands by it very strongly.

Why is your character a good fit for the setting of Soul Campaign, and what will they do once they are in the game?
I imagine that BREW would pull her into Death City because of her ability as a Hero in Sternbild. But when she arrives to the city and realizes that there isn’t that big of a pressure to fight for the war, she may find an opening to pursue her dream of singing and let go of that responsibility of being a Hero. But I imagine that she would still yearn to help people when she can. But it will take some time for her to realize that, given how she’s bad at being honest with herself.

List the abilities your character will still have in Soul Campaign:
-Athletic ability (moderate, she’s just a very fit 18 year old)
-Basic combat skills (hand-to-hand and with firearms)
-Skill in performing arts (can sing, dance, play piano, act as a hero, and write her own music)
-Ability to drive motorcycle-type vehicles

List the weaknesses your character will gain (or lose) in Soul Campaign:
-She’ll lose her impractical, distracting costume as Blue Rose (or at least lose the need for it)
-She won’t have her NEXT powers, which is what she relies on heavily for fighting

[ MEISTER ]
-It isn’t in the current app form to write about why I’ve picked this role for Karina, but I guess it could help to say that after a while of thinking it over (and weighing what could happen if she is either a weapon or a meister), the role of meister seems more fitting for her as that puts her in a strong position of control. It’s easy to run away from your doubts and fears when you are the passive partner, but if you’re the active one, you’ll need to really assert yourself. And that’s what I want for her.

Soul Description:
Determined, stubborn, bossy, unsure, loyal, brave

Karina’s soul is ice-blue and features a part of her appearance as Blue Rose: the strip of hair on the left side of her face and the fin-like headdress. It points to the fact that although she might try to turn away from it, she really considers herself a hero. Her soul also has a seemingly cross expression, but it’s really a cover-up for her uncertainties.

Ability:
Icy Soul - Able to infuse an ice element into her attacks

[ SAMPLES ]

First-Person
Hello. Hello. Is this thing on?

[Karina curiously taps on the glass of the communicator. She blinks once, then takes a breath, sitting back and relaxing. When she opens her eyes next, it’s as if her entire being has lit up, suddenly, she had gone from being a curious girl to a very confident, assertive young woman.]

Hello Death City. My name is Karina Lyle, and I am a meister. I wanted to ask if there was any place around here that was looking for any performers. I’m not looking for a specific pay, just an opportunity to show what I can do. My specialty is singing, but I can dance and act too, if needed. I won’t be shy at all about showing off here, too, if you need me to.

If you know any place that’s looking for some talent, just let me know or at least get my name out to them. Remember: the name is Karina Lyle!

[Drawing on her pop idol charm, Karina ends the feed with a cute pose and a wink!]

Third-Person
“My ice may be a little cold, but your crime has been completely put on hold!”

Blue Rose struck a victorious pose towards the camera with the criminals trapped in the wall of ice she caught them with. It was tough striking that balance: being a charming pop idol and a worthy crimefighter, but after two years of working on it, she fancied herself someone that maybe Kotetsu would be proud of. Even months after he announced his retirement, he was still constantly on her mind. After all, it was because of him that she found the courage to be the hero that she was now. And she wasn’t even escaping the reminders of him that hung around her.

Once the criminals were handed over to the authorities and the other heroes had made their retreat, Blue Rose herself moved back to her van to change out of her costume and make-up and get back home. There, hung across the back of her dressing chair was that tacky towel Kotetsu gave her before with its childishly-drawn snake so prominently displayed. A part of her wanted to hate it intensely for its horrible taste and the fact that it was given to her all because Kotetsu ruined her own towel by accident. But she couldn’t deny that it was dear to her, if she did, she’d totally be lying to herself. She learned that the hard way.

As she took the towel into her hand, she suddenly found herself in a totally dark room. Instinctively, she clutched the towel tightly to her chest and her mind focused on the situation at hand. Could it be a NEXT attack? Would she need to arm herself? She moved a hand to reach for one of her water pistols attached to her outfit, but they had gone missing. A flicker of fear ran through her mind, but Karina knew better than to give in. She shouldn’t panic. What if the cameras were on? There was no way she could let Kotetsu or her fans see her as some cowardly half-baked hero again! Her hairdo was beginning to melt. But before she could begin to search around for clues as to what had happened to her, she heard a screen flicker to life.

It was then that she learned she was brought to an entirely different world.
